Chapter Twenty
I sank down onto the damp grass, willing the day to be over. Technically it wasâalmost. It was nearing midnight, the house dark. But we were awake. Taylin was crouched next to me, Reese on her other side, and we were hiding in the same place Reese and I had been the first time we had seen the ghosts.
"Where are they?" Taylin asked.
"I don't know.â And that was the truth. âMaybe they donât appear every night.â
âYou only saw them once?â Taylin asked.
âAmalieâs too cranky when she doesnât get enough sleep to do it more than once,â Reese answered with a wink. I elbowed him, but I was smiling.
âWhen did you guys go out when you saw them?â Taylinâs gaze searched the clearing.
âAbout this time,â I answered, my eyes following hers.
"But you don't think they were ghosts?" Taylin said, sounding doubtful.
I glanced at her. "You're the expert.â
She gave me a smug look. "Of course, I am."
I gently booped her on the nose. "Don't let it go to your head," I teased.
She gave me a disgusted look, forever the preteen. I had to admit it made me smile. It was surreal, thinking that she would be my daughter legally, soon. No matter what Moira had to say about it.
"Shush," Reese said, ignoring an indignant squawk from Taylin. "I hear something.â
Silence fell, each of us holding our breath. I could hear the noise he was talking about, some type of shuffling. Could ghosts even make noise? I looked at Taylin, but she seemed just as uncertain as I was.
"What theâ" Taylinâs hissed words caught me off guard. I almost overbalanced, but she grabbed my arm. âLook.â She pointed towards one of the trees we could see. While I could see the starting of the ghostly figures about twenty feet past where she was pointing, that wasnât what Taylin was pointing out.
No, there was someone else there. Someone hiding behind a tree, apparently unaware that we were standing not too far away.
When they took another step forward, I could see who it was. Haley was standing there, a knapsack on her back, her fingers flying frantically over the screen of her phone. Every so often she would stop and apparently snap photos, albeit apparently without flash. What exactly was she doing? Could she see the ghosts that were starting to appear?
"Whoâs she?" Taylin asked quietly.
I shushed her with a finger. Haley was close enough I didnât want to risk alerting her to our presence.
The ghost-like things were starting to gather at the far clearing, most of them assuming their physical shapes. But they werenât moving.
Haley seemed to study the maybe-ghosts for a long moment, a frown on her face, before she nodded, seemingly satisfied. She stopped, giving the area around her a long scrutinizing glance. I held my breath, but her gaze didnât linger where we were hiding. I had no idea if she knew we were there. I had no idea why she was there in the first place.
As far as I knew, we were the only paranormals here.
